Lizzie Borden Portrayal Luncheon – Friday, April 26
“Lizzie Borden took an axe and gave her mother 40 whacks. When she saw what she had done, she gave her father 41.” Quad City Plus 60 Club is proud to host award-winning actress Leslie Goddard as she brings to life Lizzie Borden, accused of the brutal hatchet murder of her father and stepmother in 1892.
This sensational crime captured the public imagination of late 19th century America. On the morning of August 4, 1892, the bodies of Andrew Borden and his second wife, Abby, were found slaughtered in the home they shared with an Irish maid, Bridget, and Andrew’s 32-year-old daughter, Lizzie. Hear Lizzie’s story come alive as she talks about her life growing up in Fall River, Massachusetts, her estrangement from her stepmother, and her troubled relationship with her father. Was Lizzie a desperate and unsettled daughter who resorted to murder . . . or an innocent woman who could never escape the trauma that destroyed her life? Join us on April 26 to decide for yourself.
Leslie Goddard is an award-winning actress and scholar who has been presenting history programs for more than fifteen years. In addition to both a bachelor’s and a master’s degree in theater, she has a Ph.D. from Northwestern University and currently works full-time as a historical interpreter and public speaker. She has presented for hundreds of museums, libraries, senior centers, clubs, and other organizations around the country. And now, your Quad City Plus 60 Club has the privilege of bringing her knowledge and talent to the Quad Cities.
